Chemical Formulas and Nomenclature - Quiz on __________

Assignment 5 - Naming Binary Compounds

chemical nomenclature - systematic naming of chemical compounds

IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) - a committee that recommends rules for the naming of chemical compounds

binary compound - contains two elements

ternary compound - contains three elements

1. binary ionic compound - contains positively charged, monatomic ions of a metal and negatively charged, monatomic ions of a nonmetal

Examples: NaCl K2O MgBr AlCl3

Naming of binary ionic compounds (metal plus nonmetal)

name of cation + name of anion

2. binary molecular compound - contains atoms of two nonmetals

Examples: H2O CO2

Naming binary molecular compounds (two nonmetals)

name of first nonmetal + stem of second nonmetal + -ide

for each include prefix indicating number of atoms in the molecule

Memorize the prefixes on the bottom of page 112

Do the following assignments on page 121f: # 17, 25, 26
