Chemical Formulas and Nomenclature - Quiz on __________
Assignment 6 - Naming Acids
Molecular compounds with a formula beginning with hydrogen often
form acids when dissolved in water.
acid - molecular substance that will increase the hydrogen
ion (H+) concentration when dissolved in water
1. Naming binary acids
Acid binary compounds change their name when dissolved in water.
(aq) stands for aqueous solution.
Use the root name of the acid and the prefix hydro- and the suffix
-ic and add 'acid'.
HCl (g) = hydrogen chloride Æ
HCl (aq) hydrochloric acid
2. Naming ternary acids (oxyacids)
if the polyatomic ion ends in -ite
replace -ite with -ous and add 'acid'
HClO2 hydrogen chlorite Æ chlorous acid
HClO hydrogen hypochlorite Æ
hypochlorous acid
if the polyatomic ion ends in -ate
replace -ate with -ic and add 'acid'
HClO3 hydrogen chlorate Æ chloric acid
HClO4 hydrogen perchlorate Æ
perchloric acid
